As winter approaches and the outside temperature drops significantly, it is time to winterize your outdoor pool. If your pool was equipped with a Wattr controller, you can choose to actively winterize and use the frost protection functionality.
With active wintering, the choice is made to no longer heat the pool, but to continue circulation and thus filtration. You can also leave your automatic water treatment active. Always ensure that your heat pump is properly shut down with the pool water inside being drained.
Frost protection for energy-efficient winterization
During active wintering, the water temperature drops and the need for filtration and water treatment is consequently much lower. A good measure here is to set the filtration intervals to achieve a total filtration of 4h/day, possibly spread over several time blocks.
During periods of (prolonged) frost, a few hours of water circulation is not enough to avoid frost damage. For systems without frost protection, it is therefore recommended to switch to 24h filtration/day. Wattr’s frost protection functionality looks at the predicted outside temperature to schedule when the pump needs to run extra, on top of the specified filtration intervals. You can set the limit for this; a good (and safe) treshold value for this is 5°C. The frost protection ensures enough filtration to prevent frost damage without unnecessary extra energy consumption.
Frost protection for your Wattr system can be set from the control menu in the Wattr app. When enabled, you will also see the frost protection icon on the home screen. To ensure proper operation of your frost protection, you must always ensure that circulation can take place in all pipes, including vacuum cleaner connections, bottom suction pipes, etc. Frost protection cannot perform its function in case of equipment failure, power failure…. So it is strongly recommended to periodically check your installation.
